The Return of Illustration

An article in the March/April edition of Step Inside Design Magazine revealed that illustration is making a comeback after a continuous decline since the 50's when advancements in photography changed the way we saw the world. Then in the 80s computers began to rule the world when it came to creating imagery, pushing illustration even further down the ladder of design.

This year's Design Trends 2006 competition resulted in more than 85 of the 100 winning pieces with illustration. Last year, there were only 2. Some pieces were primarily illustration while others combined photography and graphic design with illustration to create designs.

No particular style of illustration dominated the competition. There are definite trends towards fine art, conceptual illustration, digital illustration and calligraphics are gaining momentum. Illustration of retro design is declining after a surprising popularity in the past few years.

Writer for Step Inside Design, Nancy Bernard, predicts illustration is moving towards a mystical-hippy style reminiscent of the mood of 1969. Illustration from up and coming design students are moving towards art nouveau ornaments with rich, dreamlike imagery and lots of orange and pink romantic and moody hues.
