The Cooper-Hewitt Design Museum National Design Week

During the week of October 15th, 2006 The Cooper-Hewitt Design Museum will host National Design Week which will celebrate the effects graphic design and other design media have on education through outreach programs from school teachers to their students and partnerships with design organizations across the country. Launched in 2000 to honor the best in American design, National Design Week is a part of the White House Millennium Council which seeks to increase the national awareness of design by educating the public.

"National Design Week will celebrate the best practices in design education.honoring the projects and people who demonstrate the power of design to shape communities and affect positive change, we hope to encourage future generations to think more critically about their world and how they can use design to improve it," says Cooper-Hewitt director Paul Warwick Thompson.

The awards are generated from nominations across the country celebrating a number of different avenues of design which are viewed as critical to shaping society. A committee of over 800 leading designers, educators, journalists, cultural figures, and corporate leaders from every state and most nations choose the winners in 10 different design categories.

The true highlight of National Design week is the unveiling and raised awareness of design programs released in conjunction with the awards that are designed to benefit the education of design all year round, including lectures, roundtables, and workshops based on the award winners.

The centerpiece of the National Design week is the gala which will be held on October 18. A People's Design Award will be determined through an online voting system that the public has been voting on since September and a special presentation will honor its recipient at the gala. With the sponsorship of Target admission to National Design Week, visitors will enjoy free admission to the museum.
