The Heinz Family Foundation announced today that photographer, James Nachtwey, will receive both the 12th Annual Heinz Award and a quarter million dollars for his work. This prestigious award honors individuals whose work, dedication, generosity, and skill reflect the nature of the late Senator John Heinz. The categories in which awards are given include public policy, technology, the environment, the human condition, and arts and humanities.
While previous winners have been scientists, physicians, and artists, Nachtwey is the first photographer to receive the Heinz Award. The Heinz Family Foundation noted that his work offered a "heartrending perspective on the human drama of war, famine, and discord." The chairperson of the foundation, Teresa Heinz, commented on how Nachtwey's images were compelling yet elicited compassion.
Nachtwey wasn't aware that he had been nominated for the award. According to Teresa Heinz, finalists are picked by people in the related fields. Ultimately, the decision for winners is left up to the foundation's board.
