Photo Manipulation is Becoming Problematic in the Science Field While photo manipulation may be effective in selling products and services, it is causing quite the controversy when it comes to its utilization in the field of science. More and more science journals are including scientific photographs that have been altered or manipulated. In fact, scientific journal editors are contemplating whether or not to implement a test that exposes if extensive manipulation was done to a photograph. According to the Journal of Cell Biology, roughly 25% of the documents accepted into the journal include an image that has been manipulated, usually as a means to touch up a photo's background. An estimated 1% of accepted documents have photos that have been significantly altered in some way. In addition, editors are finding that many of the experiment images contained in articles are being manipulated to include images from totally different experiments. The Dartmouth Image Science Group now has a test available to detect whether manipulation was done to digital photographs. The Journal of Cell Biology has utilized this test and other scientific journals are beginning to catch on. Similarly, the Federal Bureau of Investigation now uses these types of software to detect incidents of fraud. This software basically looks for photographic abnormalities that humans tend to ignore or not see in the first place. It also pinpoints areas of a photograph that have been filled in by programs such as Adobe Photoshop. Dynamic Digital Advertising, a pioneer in web design and advertising, has an exceptional staff of photographers who strive to produce high-quality photographs. We are aware of such tests and work collaboratively with clients to produce true-to-life photo manipulations, not as a means to alter science and history, but as a way to promote your company or product. |
