Far too often, I come across a script that was written by a client to be read, not spoken; see a sign along my commute with featured words or phrases blatantly misspelled; or receive an email blast with copy that turns off a reader faster than the email took to land in my inbox. As a professional writer, I admit that I am subjective on the subject of copywriting. One would assume that I would automatically cringe at the sight of misspellings, bad grammar, and poor copy. This is one assumption that is indeed correct. I argue, however, that as we are all part of an advanced and intelligent society, all of us should take a stand against these violations of the English language. Newsflash, not everyone is a “writer.” Accepting this is the first step.
Brace yourself as step two requires you to do a little work. Spend some time searching for degreed copywriters who have a writing style that will resonate with your target audience. Ask to see a sample of their writing. Put their writing to the test on a small project. Then, if a positive impact has been achieved, utilize the copywriter for all of your external communications so that a consistent tone is conveyed across all media types. Quick Response Codes (QRCs), mobile applications, virtual browsers, augmented reality; innovative ideas are surely taking off in the digital fast-paced world we live in. Yes, these ideas are cool, but “cool” isn’t always enough to sell savvy consumers. These marketing tactics need to be backed by substance and intelligence to be successfull. Aside from a web shortcut, what’s the value in a QRC that takes a smartphone user to a website? Rather, a QRC displayed on the packaging of a product that takes a smartphone user to a video in which he/she can listen to and watch the product in action is a QRC that can actually give a consumer confidence in making a smart buying decision.
Finding value in today’s technologies is only one side of the coin; using technologies in meaningful ways is the other. DDA EPIC is a new site to show off a nice selection of our projects and highlight some of our services. It will be launching soon as long as all goes well with the last steps. EPIC is the latest name that stands for something. “Engage. Produce. Innovate. Challenge.” This seems to be a theme with most things we make for ourselves. Just ask DDA SEM, DDA CMT, DDA VMS, DDA APPS, and DDA USA. You down with OPP, yea you know me. In addition to those sites, we have made many other interesting DDA sites and projects that are worth checking out. There is DDA Medical, DDA Video, AppleSavvy, Insideout Man, DDA Carnival, DDA Coffee, Universal Portfolio, DDA GRID, DDA in 60 Seconds, DDA at Work, YouBetMyLife, Power Pyramid, and probably some other ventures I am forgetting. I had a hand in constructing almost all of these sites and looking back I have made a ton of stuff. Seeing as the projects I just listed were just for DDA and doesn’t include any client work, I can only imagine how many client projects I have worked on in the past 5 years. Who knows what DDA will end up making in the next 5 years…
So if you haven’t done so yet, check out some of the DDA sites I listed. Take it nice and slow or you might get overwhelmed with all of the content. There is a lot to look at there and you could easily spend your whole weekend sorting through it all.
