If Dale Carnegie was alive today, he would be in Guinness book of records for the oldest living human on record but also I think he would be very interested in the whole social media boom that has emerged on the Internet.
A lot of the points made in his 1936 best seller “How to Win Friends and Influence People,” are remarkably applicable to this new technology. Especially when it comes to the business side of using Social media to your advantage to sell and market your products and services. It’s all about engaging the other person, paying attention to their point of view. The more people attracted to your social media circle, the more influence you can have on how they perceive your product/service etc.
Lets take a look at a few of the “Twelve Ways to Win People to Your Way of Thinking.”
“Let the other person do the talking.” and “Try honestly to see things from the other person’s point of view,” work great with blogs and social media tools where people can leave comments and you can respond back. This makes the other person feel important. Of course, only if you respond sincerely.
“Throw down a challenge” — this is another thing that lends itself to social media, with the use of widgets and apps that have games quizzes and polls
“Dramatize your ideas.” There is no better way to do this then with streaming video, which is a mainstay of social media thanks to Youtube and similar services.
But be aware, Social media is a double-edged sword , swing it the wrong way and all these powerful tools can suddenly work against you. So be genuine, sincere, respectful, open minded, and honest with your social media and you could see returns in the future — if not dust off a copy of Dale’s book and learn how to fake it.
