Website design: Privacy policy

Do I really need a privacy policy?

Another common page in a typical website design, is the privacy policy. Technically there is no law to say that a website requires one. But there are laws in place that say certain types of sites have to have them.

For Example, health care sites that need to be HIPAA Compliant, or if you knowingly are collecting data from children under the age of 13.

In general, it is a good idea to have one, especially if you are selling items and collect users’ information for shipping and billing purposes. That said you should be careful when you create your privacy policy, to you follow what you say. Even an accidentally-inaccurate privacy policy can be the basis of a claim for fraud or unfair trade practices.

There are tools online to help you create these, just Google policy generator and take your pick.

My main point here is remember to keep your policy up to date. When you create your policy with your original website design it may cover everything, but one slight change to your business model, not reflected in your policy, and you could be open to legal action.
