The Evolution of Video – From “Camp” to “Contemporary”
This past weekend, my girlfriend and I got into the October swing of things by renting and watching the 1980s Stephen King/John Romero horror compilation, “Creepshow.” It is a campy romp through 1950s-esque horror movies and comic books (think “The Blob”). Watching it, it occurred to me just how much has changed in filmmaking and video production since its introduction close to a century ago.
When film was starting out, odd cuts and unique camera framings were perfectly acceptable. It was OK in the 50s to hold a close-up shot on a zombie’s face for about two minutes. This was highlighted for me in “Creepshow,” where strange background fade-ins and comic book style transitions created an interesting mix of nostalgia for those types of movies, as well as creating a great appreciation for the dynamic, exciting filmmaking styles we enjoy today.
