When the temperature gets up into the 90s like it has been for the past few days, I begin to appreciate again the joy of working inside an office and forget my longing for some manual labor outside. When it’s hot enough that I can get sweaty without even lifting a finger, I like to turn to the air conditioning to cool me off. I still will want to be outside working on days when it’s between 50 and 80 degrees, but past those barriers I don’t mind indulging in the modern conveniences of heat and air conditioning. Yesterday, I forgot that it was even hot out until I stepped outside at the end of the day.
I think that the transition in the season from cold to hot has been very abrupt this year and hasn’t given anyone much time to acclimate to the new temperatures. I mean last week I was still wearing my winter coat to work! This week I would probably pass out from heat exhaustion if I had that on in the car. A scary thought is that since these past days haven’t even been really humid, they will actually seem pretty tame compared to the future hot summer days to come.
So instead of shoveling, I’ll be creating animation. Instead of lifting, I’ll be Flash programming. Instead of hammering, I’ll be adding in someone’s graphic design elements. Instead of panting, I’ll be sitting in comfort.
I think a little weekend pool trip may be calling my name… or it will be miserably cold again.
