During my recent fine arts museum trip, I was again thanking my lucky stars that they had invented the GPS for cars and that I had one. I wasn’t even actually driving for this trip, but was sitting in the back seat while someone else was driving and trying to navigate the city streets without one. We made a weird figure eight amongst other shapes as we went around and around and kept missing our target. The maze of one way streets and no left turn signs can leave any suburbanite’s head spinning with confusion. Add onto that the lack of free parking spaces and the dizzying journey continues while the driver’s frustration builds. We eventually gave in and settled for a parking garage and began the walk to the museum.
As a spoiled suburban driver, I too end up frustrated a lot when driving in the city. Luckily I have a GPS so I don’t have to worry about where to go, but trying to find free parking in itself can drive me nuts. I’m so used to nice free parking lots or even just parking on the shoulder of a calm street when visiting a friend that the sheer notion of paying to park anywhere gives me fits. I’ve slowly come to accept metered parking with a little less resistance because I’ve realized that I waste more time and gas searching forever and parking tickets are very expensive. Parking can still be hard to find though and I’m still not happy about it.
