Is there a key to your happiness?

“Is there a Key to your happiness?” I read this question in a magazine this weekend. It is a very deep question. Especially on Father’s Day weekend, when remembering family is important. Yesterday was a reminder of childhood days as we laughed and reminisced. But this weekend also included a wedding and my son’s birthday, and he will be interviewing for an important job today. So happiness can be found in the past, but also in the future. So where is my key? …I think that my key is in the here and now–my everyday. I try not to put too much effort into things that make me unhappy. It is not that we can avoid unhappy things as they happen, and they can certainly affect our lives in ways that are out of our control. But we can control how we react to them, at least in the long run.  We should allow the happy to outweigh the unhappy. Immerse ourselves in the little things that make us smile.  Daily life here at DDA can be complex, and as any job, can have ups and downs. Fielding tons of sales calls, donation requests, and more is definitely not at the top of my list of happy. But watching a project take shape and come together is a beautiful thing. Starting with the original graphic design concept, then maybe some added flash animation or video production can be mesmerizing. Then when the copywriting and custom programming comes in to play is when it all seems to come to life. To see the different aspects of the design working together in sync is a happy feeling. While we cannot be totally ignorant of all things “unhappy”, we can control its affect on our daily lives. The key to my happiness? It’s in the small everyday things. Whenever possible, I will make the effort to find and choose something happy, at least most of the time…
