Never Sell for Selling’s Sake
We had a kickoff meeting Monday for a new project that could branch off in any number of exciting directions before it’s all over. The best part of the meeting was that the clients — a very nice husband and wife team — came into the office at DDA.
Now we never discourage clients from coming in person, if they prefer, but with so many clients in so many places around the Philadelphia area and beyond, we are more than happy to do a conference call and virtual meeting. We even have a video camera set up in the conference room so clients can see us, but unfortunately, we often never get to place a face with a name and a voice.
So as David and I listened to our clients discuss the plans for their business, we all got excited about not just the project at hand, but everything we could do for them in the future. More than a few times, as an idea came up for the future, David would say, “Well, we do that too.” Whether it was CD-ROMs, print advertising, large-format advertising, logo creation, marketing and branding, or custom website design and development, our clients seemed to like the idea that one company could handle everything. A cohesive, neat look and feel is important to them, and there’s no better way to achieve that than with a full-service advertising agency like DDA.
But there was one thing in the meeting that our clients really seemed to like, and I did too. As the discussion evolved, David said, “We don’t sell our services just to sell our services.” And I realized just how true — and unique — that is.
If your business doesn’t need a custom-designed, fully optimized website, we won’t use your lack of understanding about search engine optimization just to force one on you. If your business is getting plenty of customers and traction without print advertising and billboards, then we would never insist that you need them. If you need a simple training video for your employees, we won’t try to talk you into advanced 3D animation or special effects.
That’s the biggest advantage of having so many services to offer our clients. Companies that only do website design need to force a website down your throat, even if you don’t need one. Firms that do only print advertising will try to sell you ads that won’t reach your target customers.
At DDA, we don’t have to try to sell you things, because there’s a very good chance that all the things you DO need, we can do. There are more than 20 people here with a variety of talents, specialities, and wordy job titles. But you won’t find a salesman anywhere.
