Study: Manufacturers to Boost Online Spending

Manufacturers will use the Internet to try to bolster their businesses this year, according to a study released this month by SVM E-Business Solutions and the New Jersey Chamber of Commerce.

The Parsippany, NJ, firm, in cooperation with the chamber of commerce, surveyed more than 80 executives at U.S. manufacturing firms about e-commerce and online marketing trends. The executives cited sales lead generation, growing market share and strengthening customer relationships as their top business challenges in 2005. To overcome these hurdles, 62 percent of respondents said they planned to redesign and re-launch their websites this year. Half said they would engage in search engine marketing while 45 percent said they would use e-mail campaigns.

Also, 83 percent said that Internet business is important to their firm’s needs, including 77 percent who said it is extremely or very important. Looking at the next 12 to 18 months, 88 percent said the Internet business increases would be important, including 83 percent who said this would be extremely or very important.
