As we enter our extra 6 weeks of winter, we awakened to snow. Just a smattering for us this time, but in a few days there’s a bigger punch planned. This is great news to those winter lovers who can get in a few more weeks of skiing, snowboarding and misc other activities. I have to admit to liking the cold winter days more than the hot sticky summer ones, if only I didn’t have to worry about the treacherous roads. This weekend predicts another foot or so, but at least we will have the weekend to shovel out. The kids will be disappointed that it will not cut into their school schedule this time around, not that there hasn’t already been several snow days called this winter.

As many are, I am looking forward to the coming winter Olympics. I am fascinated to watch the speed, acrobatics and grace that are displayed. During the televised festivities, I love to see the time warp videos. Black and white versions of past Olympians showing a simpler time with simpler moves, definitely less speed but with the same grace. Today’s Olympics have pushed the speed of life, breaking record after record, creating bigger, faster and trickier moves, more than seems imaginable. Groundhog Day. What a curious tradition. Folklore has created a strange mix of religious tradition and meteorologic prediction that has come to be known as Groundhog Day. The future weather has always been an important decision-making factor in history. Of course Phil’s ceremony is more for moral support than any other reason, as today’s technology (and general common sense) has come to a better understanding, we can just sit back and enjoy the fun of the show - since we already know the answer.

Despite PETA’s objection, Punxsutawney Phil is a happy spoiled little guy, that once a year is used as nature’s barometer to help people to organize their thoughts and moves for the next few weeks. I am an animal lover, and yet still I think that PETA’s objection to Phil’s captivity is absurd - no groundhog ever had it so good.
