Organized or Disorganized?

Monday, May 12th, 2008

Organization.  It’s an imposing word. One that I am constantly battling with. I was shopping at a well known housewares store this weekend, and found myself once again staring at the various organizers. I wanted them all. I am slightly obsessed with organizers (as my husband would put it). I have them in every room of the house- cabinets with a million shelves, shelves with a million drawers, drawers with a million cubbies, and so on. Although, sometimes it takes me a while to remember which cubbie inside which drawer inside which cabinet to look! On Mother’s Day, my mom called me disorganized, because I always do 5 things at once. So I thought: “Don’t  you have to be very organized in order to be able to do 5 things at once?” I’ll have to work on it…..Well, one thing that I do know is that my organization is nothing compared to that of the Project Coordinators  here at DDA. As a Pioneer advertising agency, each coordinator is handling more clients on a daily basis than I have fingers and toes. And each one is handled with professionalism and finesse, catering each of our advertising services to fit the clients individual specifications. Another detail that our coordinators can provide for each client is creative copywriting. This cleverly written information always informs and entertains the reader. We offer a full range of copywriting services, from SEO copywriting to Direct Mail copywriting to online copywriting. I think I have a lot to learn  from our Project Coordinators, and I will enjoy every minute.

About that Time

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008

It is about that time these days isn’t it? You wake up and your day is arranged according to time and place. I’ve got to be here at this time and over there in a meeting by this time. What about time makes time so awesome? In my opinion, time is a limit or restriction, which forces an individual to meet the targeted time as pre-set within the individuals’ schedule or agenda. Time makes or breaks an individual’s ability as well as attitude. When a person can maintain a schedule adequately, that person feels good about themselves, leaving them with a sense of accomplishment at the end of the day…Lord knows we do not always have the privilege of time on our side.

That same schedule that restricts the length of time each activity or project will take, can work against an individual as well as their attitude. When one task on your agenda slips slightly over the restricted or pre-set time, and appropriate time management was not considered in the development of the schedule or unscheduled events occur, we run into the time chase! Time management is something our advertising company does extremely well. Time management is one of the crucial and and most expensive functions of a company’s success or failure. This is one of the main reasons advertising agencies have difficulty competing with DDA. Everything that is requested of our advertising services from conference calls to in-house meetings are all planned ahead to the proverbial “T”.

Most advertising companies are overly conscientious about time management and being cost-effective. They run into problems because they over spend, and under deliver. More often then not, these companies make too many adjustments instead of letting their skilled web graphics designers use their talents as they were hired to do! Not letting talented individuals do what they do best is like asking an elephant to be deaf! It will not happen and the whole project will be adjusted to the point where the manager or supervisor of the project should have just performed the work themselves…sometimes you just got to let the skilled do their own thing, and provide them with the specs up front as opposed to during the work, which at this point begins to diminish the cost-effectiveness of the projects. This is one of the reasons that advertising companies tend to do lay-offs within the economy’s ups and downs…they are unable to maintain some level or average ground where productivity and cost-effectiveness meet. Therefore, the talent, money, and time are all wasted instead of nourished and it is always going to be about that time.

Billboard Advertising

Monday, April 28th, 2008

Last week I enjoyed a wonderful vacation in Florida. On the drive down, we saw multiple billboard signs to visit “South of the Border,”a dinky tourist attraction/theme park on the North and South Carolina border, and an example of successful marketing by using persistent messages and images.

The theme is Mexican and playful. Black billboards with Western style typography and colorful sombrero hats stick out to the weary driver on the monotonous road, beckoning to stop by and visit this plastic, campy world, with jumbo cactuses, and cartoonish Mexican caricatures.

On arriving, we made a beeline for “Pedro’s Coffee Shop,” which boasted the largest sign in sight. Missing Starbucks, we were happy imagining even boiled coffee in a tin pot, but the trick was on us, because the store was really a hat store. They did have Maxwell house coffee, way in the back of the store, as a bonus for buying a hat!!

We discovered that each store we ventured into had a sign that did not match its contents! We started to wonder, for whose amusement was the park really for??

Hungry, we finally moved on, without checking out the restaurants there, half expecting them to sell leather shoes instead.

Several of us had childhood memories of the billboards but had not actually ever visited the park, so we did leave with this revisited mystery finally satisfied.

Trade Show Worlds

Tuesday, April 15th, 2008

Trade show graphics are in a unique world by themselves. Sometimes the graphics convey particular messages, and sometimes they provide backdrop ambiance. Sometimes the world is an Alice in Wonderland one.

For a previous medical trade show we created a forest of trees out of larger-than-life-sized needles. For the same show, I created several 10-foot by 17-foot trompe l’oiel backgrounds of surgical rooms, with 3-D mannequin parts sticking out of the drawing!

Creating graphics at such a large size has unique challenges and rules. The fonts must be readable, the file must be examined carefully for image quality, and the file size has to be manageable.

Today, I’m working on a 10-foot high, 4-panel graphic and wrap-around pedastal for a company for which we have created other printed literature. I like that the literature and other graphics we’ve created for them are visually integrated with each other. We’re also photographing a product for this company today, so that it will be large enough to use for the trade show graphic I’m creating, and now they’ll have the photograph on file to use in any future projects as well.

I hope that people visiting their trade show booth will, at least for a few moments, feel immersed in a unique world.

The Beauty is in the Details

Monday, April 14th, 2008

Over our wonderful long 3 day weekend that we have the pleasure of enjoying every week here at DDA, I like to try to see the beauty all around me. The world holds a multitude of the most amazing things- from the beauty of the tiny details of a daffodil to the huge murals on the buildings in Philadelphia.  The details are what make each thing special and beautiful.  The same holds true for all things designed here at DDA. We have Graphic Design Specialists that will astound you with their attention to detail. And this holds true for all aspects of DDA. Everything we do, from copywriting services, audio and video production, programming services, advertising services to search engine optimization has an attention to detail that makes DDA stand out above the rest.

Print Design/Print Production Expertise

Thursday, April 10th, 2008

Dynamic Digital Advertising (DDA) is a full-service advertising agency that excels at many things.  One area with exceptional depth is print design and print production. A client searching our print portfolio will see examples from single sheet sell sheets, to trifold brochures, to more sophisticated hybrids of folder/brochures complete with BRC (business return card) attached, to postcards of every size.

We have even developed a very unusual color system so a client needing color critical chips in brochure format to sell a product like paint or lipstick or grout can get an exact match to the product. Yes, to say we create the exotic and unusual in print is an understatement! But we thrive on those kinds of challenges.

We can export this model to any of our advertising services, and examine projects and come up with the same conclusions, DDA ROCKS. Which is to say we have to keep improving and learning and growing so we are ahead of the curve always. And most days we do. Everyone who works in the different areas of graphic design, copywriting, business development, animation, and programming realizes each one is not average or they would not be working here.

This Thursday, I salute us all, and hope we will be blessed again next week with enthusiasm, energy, and passion for our work.

A Morning of Email

Wednesday, April 9th, 2008

How did we ever get along without email? It’s hard to imagine communicating to colleagues, friends, or family any other way. Whether you use email to say hi to your sister in another town or use it to send important files to your colleague in the office right next to yours, email is not only useful it’s necessary.

One of my main projects this week was to design an Email Newsletter for a very important client of ours who has used many of our other advertising services, such as trade show graphic design, brochure design, and website design. Their request was to have us create an Email Newsletter that their Sales Reps could use to send to their customers daily with product sale information. So, not only is email used for communication, we are also using it, and have been using it, for email marketing… which has become a useful sales tool for many companies.

I know I would much rather find a marketing piece in my email box rather than my mailbox. It’s a much greener alternative!  Think about how you would get through the day without email. Would your productivity be slow? Would the phone be attached to your ear all day? Would you be spending more money on postage? While you ponder those questions, I will finish answering the many new emails I just received.
