Cookie Cutter Website Design/Search Engine Optimization… Not at DDA!

Monday, May 5th, 2008

When I think of cookie cutter, I think of the dictionary’s definition… a device, usually of metal, for cutting shaped forms, as circles or stars, for cookies from dough that has been rolled flat. This is probably because I love baking!

Baking was one of my all time favorite things to do with my Mom. She baked all of our elaborate birthday cakes and always had cupcakes ready for us as a little surprise on holiday mornings. I have taken her recipes and secret tips and continued the baking tradition. From cakes to cookies, cupcakes to cobblers she taught me how to do it all. Over the years, I haven’t had as much time to bake and at times have resorted to running to the store to pickup something from the bakery section… but this weekend I was back in the kitchen and baking cakes, cupcakes, and making sand pudding.

In today’s world, cookie cutter has come to mean the footprint/shape/base of something that is the same and repeated over and over.

Cookie cutter is probably used most often to describe website design. Other website design companies are using templates to create websites. DDA knows better!

Search engine optimization could also be considered to be cookie cutter by having the same meta tags on each page etc. At DDA, a search enging marketing company, we take the time to focus each individual page of an optimized website on a specific topic. We treat each of the sites that are enrolled in our SureThing Optimization Program like we are baking them from scratch, in a sense, making sure that each site has the proper ingredients to increase their website rankings on Google. And when the timer has gone off… our client’s websites have achieved numerous rankings on the first page of Google.

At DDA, we leave the cookie cutters at home!

Let your Website age, Google likes the taste better

Monday, April 28th, 2008

The tip of the week is for people launching brand new websites. Don’t launch one with a brand new domain name; well, don’t do that if you expect it to rank well.

Due to Google’s aging delay for all new domains, it can take up to six months just for your site to, and that is on the quick side. It is more like eight to nine months even up to 12.

The idea of the aging delay in Google’s eyes, is to stop people creating spam, like throw-away sites that can rank well for a few months before being blocked. If you have to wait six months, it simply takes those sites away from spammers as a tool for quick rankings.

But wait, we do have solutions.

  1. The best one is to use your existing domian name. This name will already have links to it and a history of content.
  2. Second best would be to use a subdomain, i.e leaves.trees.com would be a good site for your leaves branch of your firm if your main firm was trees.com. You don’t get any existing links but the domain is established in Google’s eyes.
  3. As a good website is not built overnight, but is a project lasting several months, you could plan ahead and buy the new name as soon as you start to create a new site. Simply post up a quick brochure style site or holding page, so that Google can find the domain and it will enter the aging process as you and your website design company create your new site. Thus when you launch your full site, it will not have as long to wait to be ranked.

If you have already launched your site on a new domain, then don’t worry you will rank. You just have to be patient and wait for Google.

Browser Differences

Monday, April 7th, 2008

Web pages showing up differently in different browsers is a nuisance that keeps rearing its head.

Luckily at DDA, we have plenty of Macs and PCs with all of the browsers on them to test the pages before we go live with anything.

Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Safari are the big three browsers that we test on. Differences in the interpretation of certain tags and other elements make pages look different and the goal is to have everything look consistent on all computers and browsers.

We also have to remember that even different versions of the same browser can display things differently, and that is taken into account.

I remember once getting an error with the background of the flash piece not becoming transparent, but it was only happening on Firefox from a Mac computer. This was a very specific setup to even see the error and that’s why all combinations of computers and browsers must always be checked. With some brief research, we found that this error was common and discovered the reason why it was happening, which led to a quick fix.

Always remember to check your pages on every setup.
