Stormy Weather

I don’t know about anyone else, but I love thunderstorms.  The severe weather this morning is making for a perfect programming day.  As kids, on stormy summer days we all had to find something to do inside. For me it was sitting in front of a computer for a couple of hours, so yes, this does bring me back to childhood.  So while we wonder if the power is going to go out, or if we’re going to lose our Internet connection, we work.

Today’s task is continuing the programming for a CME site.  The database was built earlier this year but now it’s time to get into the nitty gritty.  I’m currently building Coldfusion CFC files that will provide all of the data access necessary.  Once those are done, it’s just a matter of building some modules where the actual forms and listings of the data will be displayed, added and updated.  When these modules are complete, the individual screens can then be set up in any way that the user interface deems appropriate.  The cool thing about modular programming (which some would call framework) is that just about everything is reusable.  I can set up these modules that can be used in multiple screens, which can just get plugged in with a few lines of code.  It makes further customization easier, not only because we don’t have to go back and modify all pages, but because we don’t have to rewrite anything new, all the code is already there to do what we want.
