That time of year
It’s that time of year again. No, it’s not the end of the school year, or the beginning of summer, or almost Father’s Day. I mean, it is, but that’s not what I’m talking about. It’s E3 time! For years now there’s been one definite week of crazy new stuff for gamers: The Electronic Entertainment Expo. It’s the best time of the year to find out what cool new games and consoles and gaming gadgets are coming to a store near you. This year seems to be the year of new controllers, or, in one case, controller-less-ness. Both Nintendo and Sony have come up with a cool new motion sensing controller that is going to once again change the way we play video games … but the even bigger one seems to be the new XBOX non-controller controller. It uses video mapping to see where you are and you become the controller. Really cool. So while I think about how swordfights will now start changing and playing frisbee with my virtual dog, I will continue my daily work life, a lot less graphically interesting.
Today’s task is to get up and running a database design for one of our clients who is requesting a social site where users can upload videos to contests and vote. It will involve, of course, a user login area with a profile and the administrative creation of contests. Each contest will have a theme that can show a different page design. The upload function will tag the upload with the contest and show it in a listing. Logged in users will then be able to vote for the video (and flag it if it is inappropriate). It’s actually pretty exciting from a programming standpoint, but it’s certainly not on the level of a Lego Harry Potter game.
