How long did that take you to do?

If I worked in a business where appointments or services have to be tightly scheduled, I think I would not last very long. I am not a clock watcher. But I seem to have an instinct for when I’m spending too much time on one thing. Over the weekend, I had occasion to observe a business where the clock was king. If the person scheduled for 4:20 was not there, that appointment was cancelled, no questions asked, no explanations necessary. The reason they could operate that way was they have more than enough customers, so displeasing a small percentage was not a primary concern.

Turning away business is something we have always done at DDA, even when we could ill afford to do it, but not for the same reasons as outlined above. We turn away a company if the people are rude, too demanding and don’t really know what they are doing. We turn away anyone requesting a brochure or video to sell cigarettes or companies wanting TV ads to sell real fur coats.

We have worked very hard to create a company that is ethical, produces first rate work with all the services we provide from writing search engine optimization copy to creating logos to providing concepts for graphic design to solving problems for our clients with email issues and so on. We have worked hard to create a culture of passionate people who believe in what they do, and who work well in teams (unusual among creative types). We strive to maintain a working culture where everyone feels valued and even if pats on the back are not a daily happening, everyone knows the bosses have eyes in the back of their heads, and you can’t stay if you don’t perform.

As we gear up for business in an economic slowdown, it is important that we work smart, use time judiciously so we attract companies impressed with our capabilities. The old bromide “success breeds success” is so true! So let’s all watch the clock the right way!
