Finding Inspiration: On-Demand Creativity

I may have written about this topic once before, but I feel it’s worthy enough for another blog post. One of the most challenging aspects of my job as lead graphic designer at DDA is being creative and finding creative inspiration daily and on-demand, being able to channel the creative voice inside at the moment it is needed while working on a healthcare practice’s logo design (which is what I will be focusing on this morning) or developing a new presentation design for DDA Medical is not as easy as it should be at times. Each week I submit my “time sheet” that reflects the work I did the week before and when the work was completed. What it doesn’t reflect is the time I spent thinking about the work I did or the work I need to do and what that work will look like or how it will function.

For example, the past weekend was spent wiping running noses, cleaning hardwood floors, grocery shopping, doing laundry, disciplining, laughing at my silly kids, and enjoying a much needed night out. Concurrently, I was thinking about the new presentation design for DDA Medical and how its design should enhance the existing design while at the same time be new, fresh and extremely useful.  Each morning before I start work I try to take a few minutes to find something that inspires me. If I am working on a new medical or corporate website design I may take a peak at existing websites I find successful, browse through my meeting notes to make sure I’m staying within the goals intended, and/or browse through a few page of design publications. Just this morning while watching Sesame Street with my 1-year old, I was finding inspiration in the new opening sequence and the cut-out treatment of the graphic elements.  So, the time has come to get to work and I’m hoping today is full of new ideas, designs and experiences!
