Stewards By Choice

Over the weekend, David and I found an organic vegetable stand that delighted us. Why? Because it is run by a brother and sister, both under ten. Their mom was supervising, and she explained how this was their summer project. And what a project it is. They had broccoli, green onions, yellow and green squash, red leaf lettuce and a sign that read “Tomatoes and eggplant coming in a week.” They planted everything themselves, tended to the garden, harvested their crops and now stood by the roadside under the shade of a big tree proudly selling their produce.

These kids are so lucky. Their parents are affluent, and could be lazy and just give them money. Instead they are taking the time to instill in them all the lessons learned from working the soil, the patience needed to grow vegetables organically, the discipline to tend to their plants for weeks and then the skills to sell their wares. Their mom told us the money they earn will go toward their Disney vacation. This brother and sister are growing up with real values and a realization that part of all our responsibility is to act as stewards of the only earth we have.

At DDA, I believe we know this.  All of us, in our own way, exercise the privilege of stewardship when we do the best work we can whether we are graphic designers or production assistants, whether we are involved in a big project or just making requested changes and updates to a client’s website, we conduct ourselves professionally. Our business development team always works to enlighten business prospects. It is not just a job, it is we hope the beginning of a real relationship when a new client understands we only do custom work, and we truly care that the project or projects exceeds expectations.

If you read some of our earlier posts, you will see many that talked about our daily attempts to maintain the green office environment. There is more we can do, but I am very proud of our long standing four day week, our recycling effort, and the habit we have in every department of turning off all the electronics for the long weekend.

Indeed, the DDA staff believes in personal and business stewardship!
