The Truth Vibe

All of us who work at DDA wear more than one hat. Some hats fit better than others, some we like more than others. The hat I most dislike is collecting on very late invoices. I truly appreciate how hard things are today for all businesses, but I still try very hard to work closely with our vendors to get them paid. On the other hand, we have some clients who think it is okay to fib, nay maybe even lie so they can delay payment. What, I ask, is the purpose of such behavior? I think, suck it up, and tell the truth. You don’t have the money right now, so pay part of what you owe. But don’t do that “I never got the invoice” bit. True the post office makes mistakes, but today you can STILL count on first class mail being delivered.

There are endless examples of people who lie. I’m sure there are endless studies as well as to why. You see it everyday–in the media, in corporations, in social circles. Sometimes it is “sweet little lies”. Other times it is overt deception. It seems acceptable in most cultures. To me, while it may be surprisingly common (listen to the slanted news from both the conservative and liberal press) lying is a very complex phenomenon.

Shakespeare said it best “Oh, what a tangled web we weave, when first we practice to deceive…” At DDA, we strive to tell the truth. We don’t tell clients what they want to hear, we don’t make promises we cannot keep. We don’t pretend something is complete before it is. Falsehoods, big and small diminish credibility and legitimacy. I would like to believe that DDA staffers value trust and transmit that vibe every day, every way.
