Back to the Future
Next weekend, I’m going back to school - college that is - to reunite with about eight girlfriends who were like sorority sisters to me. Some I’ve seen more recently than others, but I’m excited to see each of their faces and catch up. Also, I can’t wait to walk the campus again, see where they tore down our off-campus housing to expand, and possibly cross paths with some of my favorite professors. Although it’s been a few years since graduation, I still remember making that critical decision to pursue professional writing as a career and finding my niche in advertising.
Some students are lucky in that they know what they want to do for the rest of their life in high school as a result of some impacting life experience. I was not quite so lucky. I was interested in so many things - accounting, psychology, sociology, education, marketing, business management, English literature, women’s studies, and writing - that it was difficult to decide just one track. Little did I know then that I would be able to make use of all of those interests in some capacity at Dynamic Digital Advertising as Lead Writer of the copywriting department. As I await content feedback from a client with whom I am developing search engine optimization copywriting for a website to be a valuable source of information for women with preeclampsia, I’m able to address accounts receivable issues should they arise and manage projects from inception to completion as project coordinator. In email correspondances, I even find myself using old English phrases like “at your earliest convenience” that I used to read about in Pride and Prejudice and other novels.
I feel lucky to make use of the interests that got me motivated back then, and to expand and evolve those interests over time. I hope to hear that my girlfriends are still happy with their decisions and that they are enjoying all that their careers have to offer.
