While perusing TV channels the other night looking for something good to watch before my usual lineup started, I came across a show on ABC called Shark Tank. For those who haven’t seen the show, the concept is that an average business man or woman presents their innovative ideas to a panel of five “investors” in hopes of striking a deal - financial backing in exchange for partial ownership. I admit that by the end of the episode, I found myself a fan. I enjoyed hearing about the ideas people have for business ventures, where, when, and how those ideas originated, and, in turn, the thoughts and perspectives of those prepared to provide funding or decide to back out. I also found interest in hearing what the “professionals” deemed viable markets.
It’s no surprise that someone like myself would be compelled to watch a show like Shark Tank. I’m an advertising copywriter and learning about businesses and helping them convey a message that they are leaders in their industry is my job. In the 4+ years of employment at our interactive advertising and marketing agency, I’ve worn a few hats and at one time played a role in New Business Development. I no longer undertake those responsibilities, but I’m able to remember being on the other end of a preliminary conference call, listening to an initial contact explain what they do, how they do it, and why they need to advertise. While many calls were with well established businesses, a few were with start-ups so excited and enthusiastic about their ideas that it was contagious. Yes, a few ideas were harebrained and needed to be developed, refined, or even possibly crinkled up and discarded in the trash bin of “what were you thinking?” However, a few served as great examples of what it means to stretch the imagination and break new ground.
Although my days of initial New Business Development are no more, we have an exceptional team ready and willing to hear your ideas.
