We’re Good at What We Do
One of the many things that I love about my husband is his (what I like to call) “trivia knowledge”. He loves to learn new things, and rather than being boastful about what he’s learned, he’ll integrate some gem of knowledge into casual conversation with all types of people. Every time he does it, it amazes me. In private, I’ll ask him where the heck he heard of such things or how he knows something to be true. In public, I look at him and smile (giggling on the inside) at the fact that there he’s gone and done it again.
But in conversation with him this past weekend, he made a remark that caught me off guard. He said, “I’m a great mechanic!”. I thought to myself, “how conceded!”, and made him explain. His response was, “If you don’t know that you’re good at what you do, then you have no business doing it.” If you don’t know my husband, sometimes he comes off a bit abrupt. But the truth is, he was right. Aside from one always striving to improve on their skills (which we both agreed was very important), one should have a healthy confidence in what they do. Hearing this, I said, “I’m a good writer and communicator” and my mom replied by stating what she’s good at and so it went around the room.
