Skipping Seasons

Last night, it was about 40 degrees outside. Wet, ugly, cloudy, windy, and cold.

On Saturday, it’s supposed to be almost 90 degrees. Hot, sunny, and perfect — just in time for the weekend.

Apparently, spring has not sprung — it’s gone into hiding. So, if I can sufficiently shake this cough and cold that has plagued my house (hasn’t hit the dog, yet), I will hopefully take full advantage of the warm weather. Don’t bet on more yard work though, my muscles have yet to recover from last week’s ivy-cutting and grass-seeding efforts.

I get to enjoy an extra day of this potentially beautiful weekend thanks to DDA’s four-day workweek. When DDA began working four 10-hour days instead of the traditional five 8-hour days, it was a “crazy” idea. Now, it’s being adopted all over the place, and has proven to be more energy efficient and better for the environment (not to mention enjoyable for employees). But just because we’re at home on Fridays when most of our clients are open for business doesn’t mean they have to feel disconnected from their ongoing projects. Now I don’t pretend to spend every moment of my Friday checking my email. But like everyone here at DDA, I make sure to check in on it a few times during the day, and address any issues that may come up. And since all of our clients are aware of our unorthodox schedule, they understand and rarely ask for rush jobs or other actions on Fridays.

I’ve never taken an official survey, but I think the rest of the DDA staff — from copywriters, animators, and programmers to videographers, SEO specialists, and graphic designers — enjoys the condensed work week just as much as I do. Our clients love it too, for the most part. Whenever I tell one of them about it, I usually hear “Wow, that’s really cool. I wish we did that.

At DDA, we’ve been a trend-setter for years, whether it’s with our extensive list of capabilities, or our weekly work schedule. And if your business wants to follow our four-day example, we won’t mind — although it might be a little late to do it in time to enjoy this weekend’s weather.
