Marketing that Catches the Eye
On Saturday, my mother and I will be accompanying my younger sister on the first of several upcoming college visits. She is a junior in high school and is in the process of trying to decide where she would like to spend her four years after graduating. The first one up is Gettysburg College.
Over the past few months, my sister has received about $40,000. worth of direct mail marketing courtesy of schools all over the Northeast. She has a file drawer devoted to the college mailings. I’ve watched her as she’s poured through piles of mail and was bemused as she selected slick, glossy cards and said “Look, Toni. They texted me,” or “My name is on their sign,” referring to the different tactics by colleges to personalize their marketing materials. I would like to think that she is only filling out the”request for visit/more information” cards only for colleges she really likes, but I do have to say there were several colleges that caught her eye because of their unique attempts that ordinarily she may have passed on by. Case in point, Gettysburg College.
Colleges are just one example of industries bogged down with competition, all trying to go after the same target audience. There are several that fit within this mold in the corporate and medical worlds.
