One Name Says it All

Yesterday, during my drive home, I happened to look at a small patch of businesses along the road. I was stuck at a traffic light with nothing else to do. All three businesses were crammed together in one of those house-like commercial spaces that just happens to be along the sidewalk in the middle of a block on a major road that’s residential/commercial. I think you get the picture. To get more exposure, this particular group of three did what most other similar businesses do, they decorated the front of the building with large colorful signs advertising their businesses.

Of the three, two had names that left me confused and immediately turned me off. It’s not that they were inappropriate or offensive, it’s that they both conjured images in my head that were not related to the services being offered. I won’t write the actual businesses here but I will give you a similar example, which I’m making up, to give an idea of what I’m talking about — “Futuristic Cabinetry.” Now, from that name you may automatically think of some kind of space-age material, or crazy, off-the-wall design. If you’re not interested in this type of look or style, you may immediately rule this company out and not contact them. But what if the business really just offered your standard types of cabinetry. Perhaps high quality and uniquely designed, but typical nonetheless and not at all futuristic. You would have passed them right on by when they could have been the best fit.

There’s a lot in a name and it could really be the difference between a customer actually contacting you or walking on by.
