File Transfer Protocol (FTP) Website

File Transfer Protocol (FTP) websites are most often a tool of Extranet website systems. Their function is similar to that of a document library as they provide a secure location for companies, partners, clients, etc., to exchange documents. Once loaded on a website, the document can be downloaded, viewed, printed, or manipulated by a user if they have the proper security clearance. The original author of the document as well as the administrators of the website also have the ability to remove the document from the FTP website or bar specific users or groups of users from accessing the document.

FTP websites allow for the instantaneous exchange of files that are too large to be sent via email, CD-ROM, floppy disk, or DVD, or that for security purposes you do not wish to send through any of these media. Documents that can be exchanged through a File Transfer Protocol website include Word documents, CAD drawings, photographs, graphic designs and other images, and many more. Furthermore, FTP websites will function on just about any computer platform making it accessible to an extremely large number of people.
