A meta tag is an HTML element that is important,
but not vital in helping a search engine generate and display search
listings for maximum relevancy to a search engine user’s search
query.
Having the right meta tag keyword used to be
a very important part of the search
engine marketing and website
design process, in the 90s, when search engine marketing started
to hit the ground running. Since then, search engines began recognizing
that certain websites were listing irrelevant meta tags to drive any
and all traffic they could to their site. Currently, most search engines,
including Google, do not use meta tags as part of their criteria for
determining page rank.
