At first, the Internet was primarily a medium
for academics, researchers, and the military to share information. However,
it did not take long for entrepreneurial visionaries to realize that
this new medium was ideal for selling everything from pet supplies and
furniture to medical services and streaming sports coverage. But with
any new medium in its infancy, the early Internet was aesthetically
crude and not really all that appealing to consumers. Since then, many
improvements have been made in relation to web design and today there's
a debate going on about conversion from a 1997-era HTML tables design
to a modern CSS design.
Although HTML table layouts served a purpose in the beginning, they
are now known to cause a multitude of problems when rending to speech
or to text only user agents. Tables mix presentational data in with
your content, which makes the files of your pages unnecessarily large
and annoying to download. Additionally, tables make redesigns of existing
sites and content extremely labor intensive and expensive as well as
extremely difficult to maintain visual consistency. Furthermore, table-based
pages are not as accessible to people with disabilities or those using
cell phones or PDAs to access the Web. Hence, the evolution of CSS-style
web design.
Dynamic Digital Advertising (DDA) is progressing with this latest trend
in web design and programming. In 1997, we built sites using the HTML
table style, but since then, we have moved toward implementing the CSS
style. While, we continue to design sites using HTML table layouts,
we encourage our clients to recognize the advantages of CSS layout and
make the switch for a better website medium to long term. Instead of
nesting tables within tables and filling empty cells with spacer GIFs,
we can use much simpler markup and CSS to lay out beautiful sites that
are faster to load, easier to redesign, and more accessible to everyone.
At DDA, we realize that web publishing is longer just about slapping
together some HTML tags, placing them on the Web, and that's the end
of the process. But rather, we believe that the process doesn't end
when we publish - it's only just begun. For this reason, our web designers
and programmers make it a whole lot easier to share and re-use content
by using CSS style designs. Just like the entrepreneurial visionaries
of the past, we are always looking to improve the ways a business market
their products or services both today and into the future.
