Interest in American quilts, both antique and new, has grown steadily in the last decades encouraging a revival in quilt making and collecting unparalleled in contemporary society. Only recently has the fine handwork of American women been acknowledged as one of the great artistic achievements of this country. Through the years, Pennsylvania women have made significant contributions to this creative heritage. Their quilts display their excellent sense of color and design and their expertise in needlework techniques. Early Pennsylvania German settlers brought quilts with them from Europe. However, the art of patchwork as we know it today, was developed in America with the culture of each area lending to the emergence of unique variations. A creation truly MADE IN AMERICA ! Many patterns, when well executed, become abstract fabric paintings. This is especially obvious in the bold, bright modernistic colors and arrangements seen in Amish quilts and in the elegant, subtle blending of muted calicos in Mennonite quilts. A quilt may be viewed as an art form able to stand alone, or it may be used to complete a color scheme. Our quilts demonstrate skillful flexibility in both aspects. In this respect, quilts are particularly adaptable for use in the home or business environment. As a wall hanging or on a sofa, loft railing or on a table, they provide an innovative use of traditional art. Displayed in an entry way or lobby, a quilt adds dramatic effect with the welcoming warmth of Pennsylvania Dutch Country. I select only new quilts of superior color and pattern and of excellent piecing and stitching, made in the finest cottons and blends. With few exceptions,my quilters who keep this heritage flourishing today ply their craft with skills passed from one generation to another. Meticulous hand quilting finishes our hangings and quilts. They are NEVER machine quilted or tied. All applique is also done entirely by hand. Whether it's the radiant colors, the fascinating pattern or the soulful harmony of history and purpose, a quilt is a wonderful heirloom to be admired and cherished for generations just as the spirit and craft of quilting has been preserved through the years. |
