‘If you build it, they will come’ or will they?
Over the past decade, businesses have witnessed a shift in advertising dollars from traditional media (print, radio, and broadcast TV) to online outlets. From 2008 to 2009, there was a 27.2% decrease in advertising according to the Newspaper Association of America. More and more traditional media outlets are turning to social media and online video to engage their audience.
As your business makes the move to social media, continue to push the envelope and strive for audience engagement by asking and answering questions. If you do not interact with you audience your social media experience will not reach its true potential. If you show an interest in your audience and their thoughts/opinions you will find that they will respond by interacting via social media outlets. Try to publish posts that elicit widespread response and be a conversation starter. Read through your audiences comments and respond to those who are insightful. This type of engagement is a good step in the right direction.
Just like any other branding effort, social media campaigns need to be promoted. Social media doesn’t follow the Field of Dreams belief that “If you build it, they will come.”
