Sadly, after being together for almost 6 years, my computer has passed on. Just one more month and we would have been celebrating our sixth anniversary, but now I am forced to say ‘almost’ six years. The hard drive has finally failed. One blue screen led to another and another. I tried reinstalling windows in a panic, but it was no use. It couldn’t even be done. I keep wondering if it was something I did or if it was just its time.
After I realized that it really was the end, I had to figure out what I had on there that was now gone. It was a lot. Tons of pictures, tax information, website work, random animations, all my college reports and projects, my music library… the list goes on and on. There is also the fact that everything was saved an configured to my exact specifications. Also, any software or hardware I had installed will have to be added again. A lot of the loss could have been avoided if I had my own external hard drive, but I don’t.
At DDA, I know we are prepared for any random computer failings like I just had. Everyone has their own external hard drive to back up all the computer’s data daily. There are so many other protocols to make sure that no one’s work is lost – archived CD’s and servers with the website data for example.
With DDA, you can know that any work we do for you will be safe and kept forever, so even if you lose it, we will still have it.
For now, I guess I can just look to the future and think of what new computer I can get. I could just buy a new hard drive, but I think it is time for a new system. In six years time, there have been a lot of advances in technology and it is always eclipsing itself in speed, size, and price value.
When I first got my computer, I spent a little extra for an 80 GB hard drive, but now it is becoming commonplace and affordable to have 500 GB’s standard. Now something like that I couldn’t even imagine being able to fill. I’m sure processors, graphics cards, and RAM have all also improved by leaps and bounds. I can only hope that my next computer can last as long or longer than this one did.
