Write it Out
Some days it seems like writing has overtaken my life. Yes, as my job title is split my full focus is not on writing straight copy for websites, brochures, video scripts, catalogs, or whatever else, but I do a fair amount of writing in one day all the same.
One day, my sent e-mails just for that day had reached the triple numbers. So it’s just an e-mail you say, no biggie. But working for a full service advertising and marketing company and especially in working with new clients, I have to be meticulous in what I am writing. When you bill yourself as a writer people tend to get critical even if you have the smallest slip up.
So as I bounce back and forth between projects, and duties, taking care of client questions, drafting proposals, writing content for brochures, direct mailers, and so on, my mind has to follow just as quickly. Though admittedly sometimes it’s a bit slow.
So I have found the best thing to do when those words just won’t come or your brain is spinning so fast it’s not sure which direction it wants to go, is just to write through it. I of course go back and review, make changes, edits, and so forth, but just staring at a blank page is not going to ease that block anytime soon.
It’s a tip that was touted by many a professor in college. Get it down. Just put it on paper. Don’t stop writing. Then go back and make sense of it all.
It’s helped a lot especially in such a fast-paced environment when if you stop for even a second, you’re in danger of loosing the momentum.
