Sometimes you have to miss the mark

I’ve been a graphic designer professionally for about 12 years now and before that I spent four years as an Illustration major at the Rochester Institute of Technology and to this day I still get butterflies in my stomach when showing new work to staff or clients for review. I remember sitting in the critique circle at college and wanting to throw up until my critique was over. No matter how confident I was of my work, I always had that feeling that I completely missed the mark, which I sometimes did and sometimes still do. But, as my wise father always says, “If you don’t make mistakes, you will never know how to do it right”. I’ve made plenty of a mistakes as a designer (and mother, wife, daughter, friend, sister, chef, maid, chauffeur, etc.) that you would think there wouldn’t be any more to make?

Well, there are and what separates a seasoned designer from a beginning designer is being able to recognize a mistake is about to be made and fixing it before it reaches the client. So, here I am starting over on a brochure design feeling more confident and finding the design coming together much smoothly. Since I now know the wrong way, I have a clearer vision of the right way to layout the information in an interesting, engaging design. Tomorrow is a new day and while I plow through logo design revisions, another new brochure design, and final revisions to an elearning interface, hopefully I hit the mark with each one!
