Family and Virtual Reality

As mentioned in my last blog, I was expecting a visit from my father and a visit to the movies. Luckily, dad got in fine last Friday despite all the snow and airlines desperately catching up on canceled flights. The following day we also managed to get out to the movies although it required dodging around a maze of streets still covered with snow, ice, and stranded cars. At the end of the movie, both Dad and I exited the theater awe struck and a bit disoriented. Avatar was such an immersive experience in a number of ways from the quality of 3D animation, the virtual reality of the “RealD” 3D spatial visual effects, to the beauty and creativity that is the science fictional planet Pandora.  My Dad only stopped over for one full day, but I’m glad he got to experience some of the snow accumulation from the record breaking 2010 Philadelphia blizzards as well as a record breaking and technology pioneering movie Avatar.

Having been incredibly interested in 3D animation and visual effects since a kid and wanting to find out how the magic is created, I’ll be looking out for the magazine Cinefex which goes behind the scenes of CGI movies to find out just what kind of software and hardware was involved in creating the movie. With knowledge gained, I hope to be able to transfer process to our various virtual reality and 3D animation projects we produce here at DDA even though at a fraction of the scale of the Avatar movie.
