Instead, they will focus on email marketing as well as search engine marketing in hopes of increasing their profits.

According to a study done by WebTrends, Inc., email marketing is the number one activity for gaining success during the holidays. Search engine marketing was ranked second on that list. Finishing off in third place was search engine optimization.

Email marketers will tailor their audiences by focusing on their website visitors' intents and demands. In addition, they will shy away from price-based promotions and free-shipping promotions. Expect to see less room devoted to featured sale items and gift idea areas since 18% of retailers are choosing not to have site features this year.

Studies show that nearly 80% of retailers focus on establishing customer loyalty via emails. In the future, retailers are hoping to create a database aimed towards customers, using click-based information. This will hopefully gain a more target-driven audience for retailers during the winter shopping season.
