Billboards Advertise Products as well as Criminals

No longer are billboards being used solely to promote a product or a company. Nowadays, they are also being used to display the faces of fugitives and criminals across the nation. In particular, the crime-fighting show, "America's Most Wanted," has turned to using billboards in hopes of bringing awareness as well as justice to communities.

In May 2005, America's Most Wanted put up its first billboard in Detroit, Michigan. The billboard featured both a murder suspect and a number to call to place anonymous tips. John Walsh, the show's host, decided to create America's Most Wanted billboards after learning that a "wanted" billboard had generated some leads. In November 2004, a billboard displaying the face of a potential suspect involved in the Ali Kemp murder case helped police catch Benjamin Appleby. Since then, more billboards have been installed in hopes of generating leads or catching suspects involved in criminal cases.

This year, police in downtown Nashville, Tennessee, turned to billboards for help in trying to locate fugitives. The police department put up not one but four billboards in an attempt to make sure justice is served. Currently, the four billboards display Jeremy Duffer, a man charged with several crimes, including seven counts of child rape. His face will remain on these billboards until his capture, at which point another fugitive's photo will be shown.
