Philips Healthcare: HeartNavigator Virtual Medical Simulation
HeartNavigator is one of many in a series of eLearning tools DDA Medical designed exclusively for Philips Healthcare. This eLearning tool in particular was developed to provide interventional cardiologists with information on HeartNavigator's live image guidance for device positioning in complex structural heart disease procedures, such as the Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI).
Upon entering the eLearning tool, users are presented with an introduction presented in virtual examination and control room settings by an actress chosen from our DDA's Actors' Network. Here, the actress is on screen and serves as a visual guide, but within subsequent passive and active simulations her voice-over narration is used for both explanation and instruction. Footage of the actress was shot in our studios in front of a Green Screen, edited, and integrated within the virtual environment. Alternatively, the voice-over narration was recorded in one of our sound-proof audio booths, edited, and synchronized to the appropriate screen actions.
At any point within the eLearning tool, users can navigate to the passive simulation, active simulation, testing module, or any components thereof. The passive simulation was designed to explain and demonstrate the functional attributes of HeartNavigator while the active simulation was programmed so that users could practice using HeartNavigator in a risk-free environment and perform procedures at their own pace. User actions are supported by "Incorrect" and "Correct" cues and a "Show Me" area provides assistance as needed. A multiple choice testing module was created to assess users' knowledge of critically important take-home information. With a passing score, users receive a personalized certificate with a date stamp that they can print or save to their local computer.
The eLearning tool DDA Medical developed for Philips Healthcare not only includes closed captioning, log-in and registration pages, but an administrative back-end system for reporting. This eLearning tool accompanied the initial rollout of the HeartNavigator system, which has enabled Philips Healthcare to train physicians, nurses, and technicians at onset, making implementation easier and more effective.
